She followed with 11 saves in a 1-0 shutout win over Urbana University.
Georgetown is 8-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play with the split on the week.
Tigers Remain Undefeated at Home (10-29-2009)
Georgetown College remained perfect at home
with a shutout win over Pikeville College on Thursday,
45-0.
The Tigers scored on their second possession of the game when Mike Lewis connected to Chris Gohman for a 34-yard touchdown play. Georgetown never looked back, improving to 6-3 on the season and 3-2 in the Mid-South Conference East division.
Head Coach Bill Cronin was happy to have the opportunity to ease a couple of key players who had been on his injured list back onto the field, including Alex Matthews, who came in at quarterback after being out with an injury that occurred in the second game of the year.
"It was good to see Alex back in for some healthy minutes," said Cronin. "We had an opportunity to get some valuable game time for young and injured players."
Lewis finished the night 14 of 19 for 199 passing yards and three touchdowns while Matthews was 8 of 12 in the air and 86 yards.
Defensively, the Bears' Anson Cunningham led both teams with 15 tackles, six solo. Georgetown was led by two freshmen, Jake Conner who tallied eight total tackles and Andrew Jones who added six, including two for a loss of nine yards.
The Tigers will host top-ten Lambuth on Nov. 7. Kickoff is set for 1:00 and Georgetown will celebrate senior day at Toyota Stadium.

Tigers Lose on the Road (10-24-2009)
Georgetown College fell to Mid-South Conference rival Campbellsville on the road in a down-to-the-wire thriller, 21-14 on Saturday.
Georgetown had a chance to tie things up with three seconds to go and at the four-yard line after gaining the field position on a 37-yard catch by Rob Madon the play before.
Coach
Bill Cronin called a play intended for a pass to wingback Ted Sberna,
but the muddy field conditions made him unavailable and forced
quarterback Mike Lewis to go to his only other option, a throw to
Kaelin Ammons, who was surrounded by Campbellsville coverage.
It was the Tigers’ first loss to Campbellsville since 1997 and has post season implications as the Tigers (5-3, 2-2) now drop to third place in the MSC East, while Campbellsville (5-3, 2-1), along with Cumberlands, is one game back from leader Virginia-Wise.
“We knew it would be a dog fight and it was a classic ballgame,” said Cronin. “It was hard fought on both sides and we had our chance at the end but it just didn’t work – it’s all part of the game.”
Georgetown wide receiver Kaelin Ammons strung together several big plays in the final drive, including what appeared to be dropping a pass on purpose in order to stop the clock. He finished with four catches for 75 total yards and a touchdown.
While the dramatic end of the game is what it all came down to, Cronin said not capitalizing on good field position in the third quarter and coming from behind all day was the real reason for the loss.
“There is no guessing about it – it was a chess match all day long. No excuses, it came down to the wire and our guys fought all day long.”

Barmore, Philpot Honored by Mid-South Conference (10-20-2009)
Louisville, Ky. -- Georgetown College's Amy Barmore and Amanda Philpot are the Mid-South Conference Volleyball Players of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Barmore has been conference libero of the week five times and Philpot is the conference's setter of the week, also for the fifth time this season.
Philpot averaged 12.7 assists per game to earn the MSC Player of the Week along with her setter of the week honors. The Cincinnati freshman recorded double digit assists in each of her three matches, including 56 assists in a win over Cumberland University.
Her award winning week included 10 kills and a .308 hitting percentage. Philpot added three service aces and four blocks on the week.
Barmore totaled 52 digs on the week for a 6.2 digs per game average. The Louisville senior recorded double digit digs in each of the Tigers' three wins, including 27 digs in the Cumberland match. Barmore added three service aces and a .904 receiving percentage to her week.
No. 6-ranked Georgetown is 30-2 on the season, including 10-0 in the MSC.
No. 25 Tigers Upset No. 6 Cumberlands (10-17-2009)
The 25th-ranked Georgetown College Tigers handed No. 6 University of the Cumberlands (6-1, 2-1) their first loss of the season on Saturday, 23-20, in high style and in front of a homecoming crowd at Toyota Stadium.
At the end of the first drive of the game, Georgetown’s Mike Cox fumbled a punt that was picked up by Cumberlands' Desrick Jones, who took it six yards for a touchdown.
But
the Tigers (5-2, 2-1) scored on the very next drive, when a 1-yard
run by Ted Sberna, capped off an 11 play, 65 yard drive, to begin a
controlled-possession strategy that would prove crucial in the
outcome of the game.
"Our lengthy offense was the key to the game, no doubt about it," said head coach Bill Cronin, in his 13th season with the Tigers. "While that can't always be your game plan, we felt like it would be a good option for us this week if we could do it."
Georgetown opened the second quarter with another long drive, this time traveling 62 yards in 13 plays before freshman Alex Kreimer capitalized on a 42-yard field goal.
It was then Cumberlands' turn to answer, and after a 35-yard connection between quarterback Jay Bright and Willie Gibson, Justin Pritchett carried the ball two yards to put his team up 13-10 after a missed extra point by Justin Dyer.
One the next possession of the yo-yo first half, on third and four, Tiger quarterback Mike Lewis, found Sberna for a 21-yard grab to get into Patriots' territory. Six plays later, this time on fourth and two, Lewis kept the ball and ran it in for a 16-yard touchdown. Cole Richards added the extra point and the Tigers took control of the lead once again, 17-13.
The second half started with an exchange of interceptions, as the Cumberlands' Brian Abshire intercepted Lewis during the Tigers' first drive of the third quarter. The Patriots then found themselves on the receiving end of the turnover, when Georgetown senior defensive back Nick Schickel intercepted a pass intended for Gibson in the endzone for a touchback, eventualy setting up a 40-yard field goal by Kreimer to extend the Tigers' lead 20-13.
But a quick Patriots' possession with just 12 seconds left in the third tied the game up for the second time (20-20) this time on a successful pass to Gibson in the end zone.
The foot of Kreimer proved valuable yet again, when he gave his team the lead for good with a 29-yarder with 7:07 left to go in the rival game.
Georgetown's defense proved solid during the Patriots' last drive of the game, when after getting a second set of downs, Cumberlands was forced to punt.
It looked as though Georgetown, too, would punt on their next drive, but after lining up and trying to draw Cumberlands offsides and calling two timeouts, Cronin made a gutsy call to go for it on fourth and one at the Tigers' own 34-yard line. Sberna made it worthwhile, gaining four yards and, more importantly, the first down, enabling his team to run the remaining time off the clock.
"We knew we were going to go for it, but we had three timeouts to waste and and it gave me a little more time to think about the situation and decide what was best for us," said Cronin.
The win shakes things up in the Mid-South Conference East Division, where now UVA-Wise leads 3-1, with Georgetown, Cumberlands and the Tigers' next opponent, Campbellsville, are all knotted up at 2-1. Georgetown will face Campbellsville on the road, Saturday and kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Tiger Volleyball Makes It a Homecoming Sweep
The seventh-ranked Tiger Volleyball team made it a homecoming sweep, as Georgetown beat Cumberlands 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-17) in a match following the football game.
The Tigers improved to 29-2 on the year and a perfect 10-0 in Mid-South Conference play. They were led by Kyla Welch, who tallied 14 kills on 15 attempts for a hitting average of .933. Defensively, senior Amy Barmore tallied 12 digs. Senior Allie Bertke added four aces for the Tigers.

Tigers' Comeback Falls Short (10-3-2009)
Wise, Va. – Georgetown College fell just short of a stylish comeback, losing at the University of Virginia at Wise by a score of 28-21 on Saturday.
The
Tigers, who overcame a 14-0 halftime score, were down 28-21 with 37
seconds left in the game and looked to score but Mike Lewis’ pass
was intercepted at the five-yard line by Virginia-Wise’s Marcus
Bratton. It was Lewis’ fourth interception on the day.
Georgetown didn’t find the endzone until 1:57 remaining in the third quarter, when freshman fullback Dustin May scored on a one-yard run. That started the Tiger late surge, with Lewis scoring on a 16-yard run with 12:56 to go in the fourth quarter before senior running back Nik Blair scored on a one-yard run with 8:08 left in the contest. Lewis finished the day 10-of-25, passing for 161 yards but four turnovers, including the costly final pass.
UVA-Wise was paced by senior quarterback Brad Robbins, who was 13-of-21 passing for 265 yards and three touchdowns, including a 65-yard pass to Jason Lovett to put the Highland Cavaliers up 21-0 with 5:37 remaining in the third quarter.

Tigers Upset No. 10 Union (9-24-2009)
Georgetown, Ky. -- Georgetown College pulled out a to-the-wire upset as the Tigers beat No. 10 Union 21-15 on Thursday night at Toyota Stadium.
Head coach Bill Cronin was thrilled with the win and said his team enjoyed playing in the sloppy conditions.
“Union is a very talented team, who plays with their heart. Tonight was the first time the Tigers played true Tiger football in a while. We had great support tonight and a lot of fun out there on the field.”
The Tigers (3-1, 1-0) put themselves on the board first with a Bennett Gatto two-yard run seven minutes into the game. Kicker Cole Richards finished with the extra point.
The Tiger defense proved to be a big difference throughout the game, includig the first quarter, as Georgetown stopped Union on four consecutive trips before allowing the Bulldogs to put themselves in the endzone with a 39-yard pass from Mike Brinkley to Demetrius Davis. A Chad Boyington kick tied things up at seven just into the second quarter.
The Bulldogs struke once more with just 17 seconds left in the
half when Brinkley connected with Rolando Dyer for a 30-yard
touchdown. The extra point was no good and the Bulldogs
finshed the half with a 13-7 lead.
With the rain pouring down in the second half, the wet grounds made it extremely difficult to handle the ball and by game's end, both teams had fumbled twice.
After freshman fullback Dustin May's two-yard score gave the Tigers a narrow 14-13 lead halfway through the third quarter, defensive back Nick Schickel came up big for the second week in a row.
Union had the chance to gain the lead with a field goal attempt with just under three minutes to go in the period. But Schickel blocked the kick and teammate Cody Williams (shown above, photo courtesy of Steve Blake) recovered with a gain of 25 yards. That set up the drive of the game that extended into the fourth quarter - a 14 play possession, covering 75 yards, and resulting in a second touchdown by May, this time on a one-yard punch into the endzone.
Union’s offense was forced to punt on the next possession and Georgetown set up a chance for a field goal. But another blocked punt, this time in Union's favor, was recovered in the endzone by Jordan Gilliam and resulted in a safety for what would be the last score of the night.
But the excitement didn't end there.
With just two minutes left on the clock, the Tigers opted not to punt, needing just a yard. Quarterback Mike Lewis was sacked by Michael Gold, giving Union possession on the Georgetown 26-yard line. After converting a first down play and putting the Bulldogs at the 14 yard line, Brinkley spiked the ball to stop the clock, wasting a crucial down. Georgetown then held the Bulldogs for three consecutive plays to get the ball back and run out the clock.
Georgetown was led defensively by Schickel and freshman Patrick VanSant, who both tallied five solo tackles, while Union was led by William Roundtree and Jacob Crothers, each with ten.
Union fell to 2-2 on the year and 1-1 in the Mid-South Conference East division.
Next up for the Tigers is a matchup with UVA-Wise on Saturday Oct. 3. Kick off is set for 1:30 EST.

Tigers Move to No. 5 in NAIA Coaches' Poll (9-22-2009)
Kansas
City, Mo. -- Georgetown College Volleyball has moved to its
highest ranking in school history, as the Tigers moved up one spot
to No. 5 in this week's NAIA Coaches' Poll, released Tuesday
afternoon.
The ranking comes just days after then No. 6 Georgetown upset then No 5 Northwestern in an exciting five set match during the Holiday Inn Express Classic hosted by Olivet Nazarene. The Tigers also beat then ranked No. 16 Dordt and No. 22 Lindenwood and Indiana Wesleyan in route to the championship matchup.
The Tigers improved to 18-0 on the year and face Pikeville on the road tonight. For first-year head coach Nick Griffin, this week brings a new level of excitement in his 2009 squad. "It is nice to be able to measure ourselves against tough competition after last weekend and we are looking forward to more tough opponents this weekend."
Georgetown travels to Bellevue, Neb. to play in the Bruin Classic on Friday and Saturday. Ironically, the Tigers will face both Dordt and Northwestern for the second weekend in a row during the tournament. In addition, the tournament pits the Tigers in matchups versus Bethany and the host school, Bellevue, ranked No. 15 this week.
The top four in the poll remained unchanged for the third week in a row (Fresno Pacific, Concordia, California Baptist and Columbia).

Louisville, Ky. -- The Georgetown College trio of Amy Barmore, Erica Janszen and Amanda Philpot (shown above l to r) have been selected the Mid-South Conference Volleyball Players of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
The Tiger sweep marks the second time this season the trio earned the award in the same week. Philpot earns her third player of the week honor of the season and second straight.

No.6 Georgetown Knocks Off No. 5 Northwestern (9-19-2009)
Bourbonnaise, Ill--
No. 6
Georgetown College improved to 18-0 on the year after winning the
Holiday Inn Classic hosted by Olivet Nazarene University on Sept. 18 and
19.
The Tigers look to move up in this week's NAIA Coaches' Poll after quality wins over three ranked teams in No. 16 Dordt (25-15, 25-19, 25-19), No. 22 Lindenwood (19-25, 27-25, 25-23, 26-24) and in the championship match against No. 5 Northwestern (25-19, 20-25, 27-25, 19-25, 16-14). Georgetown also tallied a 3-0 win over Indiana Wesleyan in the classic with individual game scores of 25-16, 25-19, 25-16.
Head coach Nick Griffin said his squad stuck to the game plan and executed it well despite being drained from a week in which the Tigers played six matches in five days.
"Northwestern is a huge, physical team," said Griffin. "Our passing was on and we had a game plan and the girls executed and stayed in the games. It was just a great win."
Senior outside hitter Erica Janszen and freshman setter Amanda Philpot were named to the all tournament team.
Griffin said the whole team is to be credited with steady play throughout the tournament. "It was a complete, total effort. While Amanda (Philpot) was amazing and Erica (Janszen) showed her strength, it really was a mesh of all of our players. Our middle blockers are to be credited with slowing down their hitters."
Georgetown has little time to celebrate, as the Tigers will be on the road next week at Pikeville and then in Bellevue, Neb. for the Bruin Classic. Ironically, Georgetown will face Northwestern in a quick re-match on Saturday during the tournament.
The new rankings will be released on Tuesday afternoon.
Tigers Win in Overtime Style (9-19-2009)
Georgetown,
Ky.-- It took an overtime for Georgetown College to win the first home
game of the year, as the Tigers snatched away a 21-14 win over Webber
International on Saturday and improved to 2-1 on the year.
Webber International (0-4) won the coin toss and chose to kick the ball to Georgetown. It didn’t take long for the Tigers to score when, in the first possession, Tyler Hancock’s 32-yard pass to Dustin Menetrey put Georgetown on the board. Cole Richards put it through the uprights for the extra point.
The Warriors looked to tie the game just before the end of the half, but Georgetown linebacker Ryan Ball sacked quarterback Terrence Moise for a loss of seven yards, allowing the Tigers to take over on downs and take the 7-0 lead into the half.
In the third quarter, Webber tied things up with 8:45 left when Taylor Atwood carried the ball in for a four-yard score.
Tiger senior Ted Sberna received the punt at the start of the fourth quarter and looked as though he scored on the long run, but an official called him out of bounds at the Webber 19. Mike Lewis, who played as starting quarterback last season before being moved to wide receiver as a senior, was at home in the pocket and then ran the ball in on the option with 9:50 remaining in the fourth, followed by the extra point by Richards. Georgetown then led 14-7.
But the Warriors would not go away. With two minutes remaining in the game, Moise carried the ball for 13 yards, scoring a touchdown, followed by an extra point, to tie the game. After Georgetown was forced to punt on the next possession, Webber marched down the field and attempted a 37-field goal for the win, but it was no good, resulting in the first overtime in Georgetown’s Head Coach Bill Cronin’s career.
Georgetown took possession first and, on the first play, Sberna ran the ball for a gain of 19 yards. Lewis then handed the ball off to Bennett Gatto for a one yard gain before the next play when Gatto scored. The extra point by Richards was good and it was Webber International’s turn to tie things up again.
The drive came short when Ball intercepted the ball on the fourth down at the two-yard line, and giving the Tigers the dramatic win.
Georgetown’s Mike Cox had crucial punts throughout the game. His six punts tallied 260 yards, with a long of 38, and the senior pinned the opponent inside the 20, three times.
Webber’s Jamal Rodman led all receivers with six catches for 66 yards.
Georgetown now has the quick task of preparing for Union College, as the Tigers host the Bulldogs on Thursday night. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.

Tigers Win Big River Bowl over William Penn 22-14 (8-29-2009)
Dyersburg, Tenn. — Georgetown College started the year off on a high note, as the Tigers won 22-14 over William Penn University in the inaugural Big River Bowl.
The
Tigers struck first during their second drive of the game when junior
fullback Bennett Gatto ran it in from two yards out followed by freshman
Cole Richards' successful extra point to make it 7-0. The
Statesmen evened things up quickly on the next possession with a 20-yard
run by quarterback Ryan VanDalen.
In the second quarter, Georgetown's new starting quarterback, Alex Matthews, connected on an 18-yard pass with Rob Madon to give the Tigers a 13-7 lead after an unsuccessful extra point attempt. Midway through the third quarter Georgetown settled with a field goal by Richards, a 30-yarder.
"We had a great effort from all of our freshmen that were out there
today," said Bill Cronin, in his 13th year as head coach at Georgetown.
"It was great to see our rookie kicker (Richards) and punter, (Cody
Parker) who had a long punt of 57 yards, and they did it under
pressure."
Big River Bowl MVP, Alex Matthews
Another newcomer Cronin was pleased with was left tackle Robby Logan, who got his first collegiate start and played the entire game. "These rookies matured in front of our eyes out there and we are really pleased with their efforts."
Late in the third quarter, the Tigers found themselves pinned at their own 1-yard line but made two significant first downs, including a pass from Matthews to Kaelin Ammons to get out of the dangerous territory. Then came the longest play in the season opener when Matthews scrambled and threw a long pass to Ammons, who broke a couple of tackles and scored on a 71-yard play.
"Alex was rushed out of the pocket and that is a drill we have worked on quite a bit. It was just great to see them execute on that play," Cronin said.
William Penn had a chance to tie it up in the third quarter but VanDalen was tripped up at the two-yard line and the loose ball resulted in a touchback. The turnover, combined with two unsportsmanlike conduct calls, gave the Tigers the ball on the 50-yard line and, just as importantly, the momentum.
Defensively, Cronin's team "started slowly but picked up confidence as the game went on" and included two interceptions by Nick Schickel and David Gardner. "We made some adjustments early on and I thought we played really well defensively."
The Statesmen answered with a long play of their own just minutes later when VanDalen connected with Bernard Luster for a 60-yard touchdown.
Matthews was named the most valuable player of the bowl.
Next up for the Tigers is a road trip to Cumberland University on Sept. 12 after an off week. "This is a great win for us and it would have been a really long two weeks if we didn't have the 'w'. Now that we have it under our belt we can really focus," said Cronin. "We have a big part of our development ahead of us in these next two weeks."
