Women's basketball holds team camp (6/28/2010)

Georgetown
College women's basketball
team had a successful camp
this past week with 29 teams
- 12 varsity, seven junior
varsity and 10 middle school
teams.
The team camp started Sunday
and ran through Wednesday
with most teams playing 10
games in those four days.
Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday morning sessions
were dedicated to skills
broken up into guard and
post players, while the
afternoon was for games.
Above, junior Jessica Waddle
helps instruct portions of
the morning session, while
at right is junior Gina
Beining doing the same.
Several Tiger athletes were
on hand to help with the
camp.
Coach Susan Johnson is
hopeful her day camp, July
12-15, will be a good one
too.
Jude is third to sign with Tigers (5/20/2010)
Boyd County's Holly Jude
signed Wednesday with
Georgetown College women's
basketball team. The guard
joins Tates Creek Lizza
Jonas and Franklin County's
Andrea Howard as the third
member of the 2010 freshman
class.
During her senior year, the
four-year started averaged
13.3 points, 4.2 rebounds,
2.2 assists, and 2 steals
per game. She was the team's
leading scorer for three
seasons and twice led the
team in assists and steals.
She shot 44 percent from the
field in her senior season,
and finished her career with
938 points.
Her 26 points in the
championship of the North
American Steel Tournament
helped clinch that title, as
well as earn her
all-tournament honors. The
accolades did not stop there
as she was MVP of the St.
Joe Invitational,
all-district, all-area, and
all-region this past season.
Jude demonstrated her
versatility and adaptability
during her high school
career, starting as the
point guard her freshman and
sophomore year and
transitioning to shooting
guard her final two seasons.
Jonas joins Tigers (5/3/2010)
Georgetown College women's
basketball coach Susan Johnson
recently signed another
2010-2011 Tiger in 5-foot-9
guard Lizza Jonas. She is
seen below middle with
Johnson on the right and
high school coach Justin
Cheatham on the left.
The
former Tates Creek High
School standout averaged 15
points, 10 rebounds, three
assists, and five steals per
game her senior year.
She tallied 1,148 points as
a Commodore, but it isn't
just her stats that
attracted GC’s veteran coach
to Jonas.
“She’s the type of player
who will take a charge or
dive for a loose ball –
things that win games but
don’t show up in the stats,”
Johnson said.
In her four years, the guard
has been highly recognized
and in her senior year alone
was District All-Tournament,
All-Region, Region
All-Tournament, Scholastic
Ball Report Scholar Athlete,
and First Team All-City.
She has five times been
honored as the Most Valuable
Player – twice the MLK
Classic game MVP, Cardinal
Clash game MVP, Berea
Holiday Classic tournament
MVP, and Mercer Holiday
Classic game MVP.
“We are thrilled to have
Lizza joining our team next
season,” Johnson said.
“She’ll fit our style with
her ability to take the ball
to the hole to finish, and
she’s an outstanding
rebounder for her size.
“She will also bring a
number of intangibles to our
team – everyone has bragged
about her tremendous
work-ethic and desire to
improve her game.”
Howard signs with Georgetown College (4-1-2010)
Franklin
County High School’s Andrea
Howard picked Georgetown
College over Transylvania
University and Eastern
Kentucky University. The
5-foot-11 guard scored 902
points in her career at
FCHS. She also had 487
rebounds in her four years
as a Lady Flyer.
She helped Franklin County
to three straight 41st
District titles, three
straight 11th Region
semifinals and 91 total
wins. She averaged 13.1
points per game, 7.6
rebounds per game, 3.3
assists per game, 2.1 steals
per game, while shooting 44
percent from the field and
78 percent from the free
throw line in her senior
campaign.
In her four seasons, she was
named to the district
tournament team twice and
was once the MVP. Howard
earned all region team for
the regular season and
tournament this past season.
The guard’s versatility was
very important to GC coach
Susan Johnson.
“We are extremely excited
about Andrea’s decision to
attend Georgetown and become
a part of our program,”
Johnson said. “She
exemplifies the
characteristics of high
character and work ethic
that we expect of our
players. She is a versatile
player who can play any of
the perimeter positions. She
fits our style with the
ability to take the ball to
the hole and spot for the
three.”
Bears scratch Tigers in tournament
quarterfinals (3-4-2010)
FRANKFORT – In the last
quarterfinal game of the
Mid-South Conference women’s
basketball tournament,
Georgetown College battled
Pikeville.
The
Tigers (18-12) held a
10-point edge with 13:24
remaining in the game when
the Bears (17-14) exploded
for a 38-14 run down the
stretch. It gave PC an 87-73
win Thursday in Frankfort.
PC’s
Natiera Hinton sparked the
victory with 29 points (21
in the second half) on
10-of-20 shooting and
9-of-11 from the free throw
line. Pikeville advances to
the semifinals against
University of the
Cumberlands 4 p.m. Friday.
Jayme
Gilbert returned to action
for the Tigers and scored 10
points on 2-of-4 shooting
and 5-of-6 from the foul
line. But it was GC's
Jessica Waddle who supplied
the spark in the first half.
The sophomore had four
three-pointers in the early
going and finished with 18
points.
Kourtney Tyra and Emily
Drees added 10 points each
for Georgetown, while
Whitney Compton, 18, and
Meagan Johnson, 13, also
scored double digits for
Pikeville.
Academics are important to women's
basketball players (3-3-2010)
A record seven Tigers earn
Mid-South Conference
All-Academic honors
Wednesday night at the
banquet in Frankfort which
kicks off the tournament.
Emily Drees, Erin Eagan,
Jess Slonim, Mandi Boykin,
Gina Beining, Jessica Waddle
and Mikkah Rogers all
maintain a 3.2 or higher
grade point average. And
seven is half of GC coach
Susan Johnson's active
roster.
"This is the most we've
ever had," the veteran coach
said. "We have had six
twice. It speaks well of the
players and why they come to
school at Georgetown. I
don't have to worry about
too many of them."
Jackson County native
Kourtney Tyra also picked up
a few awards. She was name
Freshman of the Year and
also made the All-Conference
team. Drees and Rogers were
named to the All-Conference
Honorable Mention team.
Tigers preparing for postseason (3-2-2010)
Georgetown College women's
basketball team (18-11, 9-5
MSC) will for the second
straight year start the
postseason against Pikeville
College. And it is the third
time ever these two teams
have squared off outside the
regular season. GC holds the
2-0 edge.
The Tigers, despite being
the No. 5 seed, defeated the
No. 4 seeded Bears in the
MSC last year. But as the
No. 3 seed this year will be
looking to avoid an upset.
GC swept PC this year. Tip
is set for 4 p.m. Thursday
in Frankfort.

halftime deficit against Rio
Grande in the season finale.

Gilbert scores two on Senior Night
(2-25-2010)
Jayme Gilbert and Ausha
Weathers got one last time
to play the game they love
in front of the home crowd
Thursday on Senior Night.
Jayme Gilbert, who has been
sidelined by an illness for
the entire second half of
the season, was not going to
let Senior Night pass
without playing. Gilbert has
seen her final season cut
short in what GC coach Susan
Johnson calls one of her
best seasons. And in her
last home game she got to
score two points before
being taken out of the game.
Weathers, a Scott County
native, had six points and
eight rebounds in her final
game at Davis-Reid Alumni
Gym.
But with all the emotion of
the day, Georgetown College
women's basketball team
needed a big second half
performance to put away a
pesky St. Catharine College
team Thursday in Georgetown.
The Patriots (8-21, 2-11
Mid-South Conference) hit
seven threes, two apiece by
posts Danielle Brown and
Reena Haliburton, to take a
two-point lead into the
break, 39-37.
But GC exploded out of the
lockerroom with a 9-1 run
and never looked back on its
way to a 82-68 win,
improving the Tigers record
to 18-10 overall and 9-4 in
MSC.
Gina Beining led the charge
for GC with 15 points as
four Tigers finished in
double figures. SCC's Brown
and Erin Rogers led
all-scorers with 21 points.

and improve to 17-10 overall.

for the Blue Raiders.

(2-18-2010)
Georgetown College
women’s basketball opened leads of 20 and 19 against
Mid-South Conference opponent Pikeville, but had to weather
a late rally to pull off the 70-61 win Thursday in
Georgetown.
Mandi Boykin led a balanced Tiger
attack with 19 points and eight rebounds as they improved to 17-9 overall
and 8-3 in the conference.
Kourtney Tyra, of Jackson County,
finished with 13 points, while Corbin’s Mikkah Rogers, nine points and eight
rebounds, and Crescent Springs’ Emily Drees, nine points and nine rebounds,
were close to doublé-doubles.
Natiera Hinton led the Pikeville
rally and finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while teammate Whitney
Compton added eight points and eight rebounds.
Pikeville falls to 14-13 this
season and 2-9 in the MSC.

Saturday at Lindsey Wilson.

against West Virginia Tech, 69-46, in Montgomery, WVa. The
Tigers have gotten hot, winning seven of their last eight
games.
In a balanced attack, Mandi Boykin and Kourtney Tyra,
of Jackson County, scored 14 points each as the Tigers improved to 7-3 in
MSC and 16-9 overall. Mikkah Rogers, of Corbin, was two points shy of a
double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Junior Erin Eagan came off the bench for 12 points,
helping GC win the battle of the benches 23-15.

(2-11-2010)
The Georgetown
College women’s basketball team picked up an important 65-59
upset win over Mid-South Conference rival the University of
the Cumberlands Thursday in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
The No. 30 Tigers avenged an earlier 90-72 loss to the No.
13 Patriots in Williamsburg last month and improved to 15-9 on
the year and 6-3 in the MSC.
Freshman Kourtney
Tyra (Jackson, Ky.) fired in 21 points to lead all-scorers,
12 in the second half, and dished out six assists.
Georgetown erased
a late three-point déficit in the first half with a 7-0 run
to hold a 32-28 edge at the break. The Tigers then came out
hungry, opening up a 12-point lead, 47-35, with 12:19
remaining. The Patriots trimmed the déficit to two, 49-47,
before GC regrouped to outscore its opponent 16-12 for the
win.
Mikkah Rogers
(Corbin, Ky.), Emily Drees (Crescent Springs, Ky.) and Gina
Beining (Ottoville, Ohio) also reached doublé-digits for GC
with 10 each. Drees had a doublé-double with 14 rebounds to
go with her points.

paced the Patriots, who moved to 18-7 overall and 7-2 in the
league, with 18 points. Senior Sonia Thompson grabbed 11
