Frankfort, Ky. - Georgetown College continued its dominance of Mid-South Conference Volleyball Tournament titles, defeating Campbellsville 3-0 in the championship match and earning the trophy for the 14th year in a row.  No other team has won the MSC Tournament Championship.

The Tigers will advance to the NAIA Volleyball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa to be held Dec. 1-5.  Tournament brackets will be released on Nov. 21.

Kansas City, Mo. -- Georgetown College Volleyball has moved to its highest ranking in school history, as the Tigers moved up one spot to No. 5 in this week's NAIA Coaches' Poll, released Tuesday afternoon.

The ranking comes just days after then No. 6 Georgetown upset then No 5 Northwestern in an exciting five set match during the Holiday Inn Express Classic hosted by Olivet Nazarene.  The Tigers also beat then ranked No. 16 Dordt and No. 22 Lindenwood and Indiana Wesleyan in route to the championship matchup.

The Tigers improved to 18-0 on the year and face Pikeville on the road tonight. For first-year head coach Nick Griffin, this week brings a new level of excitement in his 2009 squad.  "It is nice to be able to measure ourselves against tough competition after last weekend and we are looking forward to more tough opponents this weekend."

Georgetown travels to Bellevue, Neb. to play in the Bruin Classic on Friday and Saturday.  Ironically, the Tigers will face both Dordt and Northwestern for the second weekend in a row during the tournament.   In addition, the tournament pits the Tigers in matchups versus Bethany and the host school, Bellevue, ranked No. 15 this week.

The top four in the poll remained unchanged for the third week in a row (Fresno Pacific, Concordia, California Baptist and Columbia).

Tigers Sweep Weekly Awards (9-22-2009)

Louisville, Ky. -- The Georgetown College trio of Amy Barmore, Erica Janszen and Amanda Philpot (shown above l to r) have been selected the Mid-South Conference Volleyball Players of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

The Tiger sweep marks the second time this season the trio earned the award in the same week. Philpot earns her third player of the week honor of the season and second straight.

Janszen averaged 4.33 kills per game to earn to earn the MSC Hitter of the Week. The Cincinnati, Ohio, senior outside hitter also earns the MSC Player of the Week award. She amassed a .270 hitting percentage while helping the Tigers to wins over three nationally ranked opponents and another receiving votes.

Barmore, a Louisville senior, averaged 4.95 digs per games to earn MSC Libero of the Week. She added eight service aces and a .969 reception percentage in the Tigers' wins. Barmore ranks fourth in the MSC in digs (4.2).

Philpot averaged 11.86 assists per game to earn MSC Setter of the Week. The Cincinnati freshman added 28 kills and averaged 2.4 digs and a .305 hitting percentage. Philpot leads the conference with a 10.6 assist per game average.

The No. 6-ranked Tigers completed the week 6-0 week to improve to 18-0 on the season, including 6-0 in the MSC.

No.6 Georgetown Knocks Off No. 5 Northwestern (9-19-2009)

Bourbonnaise, Ill-- No. 6 Georgetown College improved to 18-0 on the year after winning the Holiday Inn Classic hosted by Olivet Nazarene University on Sept. 18 and 19.

The Tigers look to move up in this week's NAIA Coaches' Poll after quality wins over three ranked teams in No. 16 Dordt (25-15, 25-19, 25-19), No. 22 Lindenwood (19-25, 27-25, 25-23, 26-24) and in the championship match against No. 5 Northwestern (25-19, 20-25, 27-25, 19-25, 16-14).  Georgetown also tallied a 3-0 win over Indiana Wesleyan in the classic with individual game scores of 25-16, 25-19, 25-16.

Head coach Nick Griffin said his squad stuck to the game plan and executed it well despite being drained from a week in which the Tigers played six matches in five days.

"Northwestern is a huge, physical team," said Griffin. "Our passing was on and we had a game plan and the girls executed and stayed in the games.  It was just a great win."

Senior outside hitter Erica Janszen and freshman setter Amanda Philpot were named to the all tournament team.

Griffin said the whole team is to be credited with steady play throughout the tournament.  "It was a complete, total effort.  While Amanda (Philpot) was amazing and Erica (Janszen) showed her strength, it really was a mesh of all of our players.  Our middle blockers are to be credited with slowing down their hitters."

Georgetown has little time to celebrate, as the Tigers will be on the road next week at Pikeville and then in Bellevue, Neb. for the Bruin Classic.  Ironically, Georgetown will face Northwestern in a quick re-match on Saturday during the tournament.

The new rankings will be released on Tuesday afternoon.

Griffin Named New Volleyball Coach (7-7-2009)

Georgetown College Director of Athletics Eric Ward announced the hiring of Nick Griffin as the school’s new head volleyball coach on Tuesday.

Griffin joins the storied Tiger program from another NAIA school strong in volleyball tradition, Olivet Nazarene University, where he served as assistant coach for a total of seven seasons in two stints.  He replaces Jeff Hulsmeyer, who after two seasons with the Tigers, accepted a position at Kansas State late last month.

“Everyone at Georgetown has made me feel very welcomed and the expectations of success at one of the premier volleyball programs in the NAIA is not unfamiliar,” said Griffin.

Ward sees in Griffin a young, yet prepared, coach who is ready to hit the campus running.

“While it was a disappointing loss when Coach Hulsmeyer decided to leave, we know Nick will pick up where Jeff left off because of his experience,” said Ward.  “He comes to us from a very successful program at a school that has many institutional and athletic similarities, so he knows what it takes.”

Griffin inherits a team that finished No. 5 in the final NAIA Coaches’ Poll last season and put together a strong Elite Eight finish in the national tournament.  The Tigers return seven seniors, including All-American outside hitter Erica Janszen.

“This is the ideal situation to be coming into,” said Griffin.  “I know that after meeting and talking with the seniors that their expectations and commitment level will make this transition very easy.  Having a roster full of talent and experience, as well as a strong class of newcomers will make for an exciting season.”

“I love pressure, I love competition and I love tradition and those are exactly the things that Georgetown has and what I look to continue and enhance as we go forward,” said Griffin.

Looking ahead, Griffin has already studied the schedule to size up the competition his team will face and admits, there is a tough schedule ahead.  “We will be tested early and often and it will be an exciting year.  Everything is in place and it is my job to pull it all together.”

The Tigers report back to campus for preseason training on Aug. 9 in preparation for their first match on Aug. 28 at the Savannah College of Art & Design Invitational in Savannah, Ga.
