46. Georgetown College

2009-2010 Baseball Team
GC baseball signs 20 for 2011 (8/16/10)
Brian Karlet wasted little time in his first recruiting season as head
coach for Georgetown College, signing 20.
GC posted a 27-32 record, 19-9 in the Ohio Valley Conference, but the
second-year coach is not satisfied.
“Bottom line is, third place in the MSC and 32 losses is unacceptable,”
Karlet said. “We have to get better, and I feel like we did this off season
with some of the guys we have coming in.”
Karlet believes some of his new players can really be the turning point for
Tiger baseball, which has been on the cusp of the national scene the past
three seasons.
“I am excited about the potential our team has this year. We really feel we
have signed some great players that will be big contributors to our
success,” Karlet said.
Jeremy Camacho, Brian Smith, Jeff Stirling, Randy Guite, Travis McBride, and
Ellis Bowen are all junior college transfers coming to Kentucky by way of
California.
“Coach (Micah) Baumfeld did a great job in getting a few guys from
California,” Karlet said. “Having coached out there previously, he really
got to work on finding some players.”
Camacho and Guite are infielders, while Smith and Stirling have been part of
the Lancers battery as catcher and pitcher respectively. McBride is also a
pitcher and infielder. Bowen is the lone outfielder in the group.
Camacho, drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 45th round out of high
school, has hit over .300 in his two seasons. He led Pasadena in almost
every defensive category, as the every-day shortstop, all of which helped to
earn him two-time All-South Coast Conference honorable mention.
Smith led California in throwing out attempted stealers with 33 in his first
season. This past season he led the Lancers in RBIs, slugging percentage,
and extra base hits. He finished tied for third in the SCC with 14 doubles,
hitting .325. All of which garnered him two All-SCC honorable mentions.
Guite is another force at the plate, batting .349 with 51 hits, 20 RBIs, 23
runs, 15 multi-hit games, and a 10-game hitting streak. In the month of
March alone, he went 20-for-48 with a .417 average and 12 runs, 12 RBIs, six
multi-hit games, a .488 on-base percentage, and a .622 slugging percentage.
All of which helped to earn him SCC All-Conference and California Community
College Athletic Association honorable mention.
McBride had five shutout innings of work against Stanislaus and had a
game-tying hit against Grand Canyon University in the bottom of the ninth in
a pinch-hit situation.
Bowen was all-conference at Glendale with a .362 average, a .510 on-base
percentage, 12 doubles, two homeruns, and hit for the cycle against Missions
College on the road.
Logan Jackson, a transfer from University of Cincinnati, was a utility
player for Tates Creek High School. He played in 19 games for UC before an
arm injury sidelined him. In high school, he was a four-year letterwinner
and played five different positions – catcher, third, first, pitcher, and
shortstop. He was first-team all-city his freshman and sophomore years and
second-team all-city and all-state his senior year. He finished his career
with the Commodores with a .428 batting average and 15 homeruns.
Brett Doggett, Jimmy Conway, Clay Hall, and John Hunter are freshman from
Kentucky about which Karlet is excited.
Doggett, a DeSales High School graduate, hit .431 in 120 plate appearances.
The infielder had a .569 slugging percentage and a .567 on-base percentage.
He pitched 36 2/3 innings with a 2.50 ERA and a 7-1 record. He was All-State
honorable mention, All “A” State Tournament team, All-Region, All-Region
Tournament team, 6th Region Senior All-Star team, All-District, and
All-District Tournament team.
Conway, a catcher for Eastern High School, was pre-season top 50 All-State.
In his senior year, he had a .436 batting average with 49 runs and 51 hits.
He had 13 doubles, a triple, and led the team with six homeruns. Conway had
42 RBIs with a .718 slugging percentage. He was All-State, All 7th Region,
All-District, 7th Region All-Star, and played in the East/West senior
all-star game.
Hall is a pitcher from Lexington Christian. He was 9-2 this past season with
a 1.30 ERA and had a 43 scoreless inning streak.
Hunter is a four-year letterwinner who batted .377 this past year at Shelby
County High School. He had 40 hits, six doubles, one triple and three
homeruns his senior year. His fielding percentage was .967.
Others signing with Georgetown were: Joel Price Jr., Caleb Bradley, Mark
Wheatley, Dakotah Greenslate, Trey Baily, Joseph Schulte, Nick Fergerson,
Sean Meyer, and Blake Jackson.
GC loses to CU, 5-1 (5/8/2010)
Campbellsville University scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning Friday night, which was the difference in the finals of the loser's bracket of the Mid-South Conference. The 5-1 loss knocks Georgetown College out of the postseason, as CU advances into Saturday's championship finals with Rio Grande.
Chase Ballinger got the start after helping the GC Tigers comeback Thursday night against St. Catharine. The sophomore from Lexington went 8 and 1/3 innings, scattering nine hits and allowing three earned runs with six strikeouts and two walks.
GC trailed 1-0 heading into the ninth when CU batted around to score four runs on five hits and four Georgetown errors. The GC Tigers tried to rally back in the bottom of the ninth. Tyler Fisher, who hit a three-run homerun in Thursday's elimination game to give GC the 7-6 win, started the last at bat with a solo homerun.
Pete Thackston, who hit two, two-run homeruns Thursday, singled. But that along with a pair of rain delays, a lightening delay, and a pitching change only delayed the inevitable. CU got the next three batters out to advance to the finals.
Tigers stave off elimination (5/7/2010)
Georgetown College was down to its final gasp as Tyler Fisher faced an 0-2 count with two outs in the top of the ninth and the Tigers trailing St. Catharine, 6-4.
But Fisher delivered a three-run, 375-foot shot over the left-center field fence to stave off elimination in the Mid-South Conference baseball tournament, 7-6. GC opened the double-elimination tournament with a 7-2 loss to Rio Grande.
The Tigers are back in action 7:30 p.m. Friday against the loser of the Rio Grande/Campbellsville game.
GC struggled offensively most of the day. Pete Thackston provided the only run production in the first 16 innings. The first baseman had a two-run homerun in the sixth inning of each game.
But finally in the top of the eighth against the Patriots, the Tigers seemed to be finding a rhythm. The first five Tigers reached safely and trimmed the deficit to 6-3 when Fisher singled in a run.
Thackston was the fifth to the plate and loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Dylan Grandon struck out, but a single by Cameron Allen made it 6-4 with the bases loaded and only one out. Tyler Back pinch hit what appeared to be a sacrifice fly that scored Fisher. However after an appeal by the Patriots to third base, the home plate umpire called Fisher out for leaving the base too early.
Chase Ballinger returned to the hill for the Tigers in what was solid relief pitching. He allowed just one hit with one strikeout and one walk in 2 and 2/3 innings for the win. He worked a quick bottom of the eighth and GC's offense got back to work.
T.C. Oneal struck out to start the inning, but back-to-back singles by Tanner Baldwin and Mike Steinke kept the Tiger hopes alive. Chris Wood struck out to set the stage for Fisher.

Tigers sweep LWC in baseball (4/30/2010)
Georgetown broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth and never
looked back to win the best-of-three series with Lindsey Wilson Friday.
The Tigers (26-30) scored four runs on five hits in the fourth on their way
to a 5-2 win. They will play next Thursday against the winner of Rio Grande
and West Virginia Tech. The Red Storm won the first game 16-3.
The Blue Raiders (30-25) pulled within three, 5-2, in the bottom of the
fifth, but never generated any more offense.
GC’s K. C. Massie retired the next 12 batters to pick up the complete game
win. He scattered four hits and gave up just one run with six strikeouts and
two walks. Pete Thackston led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-of-4 with 2
RBI and a run scored.
GC takes first in best of three series with LWC (4/29/2010)
Georgetown College jumped out early, but Lindsey Wilson battled back in
the opening round of the Mid-South Conference baseball tournament The top
four teams play host to the lower seeds this week to determine which teams
will play in the four-team, double-elimination tournament next weekend at
Campbellsville.
After jumping out to a 3-0 lead, the Tigers (25-30) needed an insurance run
in the bottom of the third to hold off the Blue Raiders (30-24). Tyler
Fisher was hit by a pitch and advanced on a fielder’s choice before Pete
Thackston double to left center scored him.
It gave GC a 4-2 lead and LWC would rally one more time, but come up a run
short to trail 1-0 in the best-of-three series. The two MSC rivals tangle
again 4 p.m. Friday. If LWC wins that, a decisive game three will be played
later that evening.
Dylan Grandon got the Tigers going with a double in the bottom of the
second. Two outs later he scored on a single by Alex Smith. Taylor Hatfield
followed with a walk. Back-to-back singles by Tanner Baldwin and Mike
Steinke scored Smith and Hatfield to open the 3-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders (30-24) closed that gap to 3-2 off timely hitting from
Heath Barnes and Garrett Helm.
Steinke led the Tigers going 3-of-4 with two RBI, while Joseph Willis led
the Blue Raiders on 2-of-4 hitting with a RBI and a run scored. Kevin Rueff
picked up the complete game win and Derek Cape suffered the loss.
Baseball finishes third, hosts weekend series (4/26/2010)
Georgetown College's baseball team (24-28, 19-9 Mid-South Conference) finished third in the overall conference standings, earning a home series to start the tournament.
The MSC tournament will be played over the next two weekends. The first weekend the top four teams - Campbellsville, Rio Grande, GC, and St. Catharine - will play host to the bottom four teams. Those teams will play in a best-of-three series.
Georgetown will play Lindsey Wilson (30-23, 12-15) with the first pitch at 6 p.m. Friday. The second game will be noon Saturday and if necessary the decisive third game will be played at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The Tigers took three of the four games in the series with the Blue Raiders.
CU spoils Senior Day (4/23/10)
In an important Mid-South Conference
series, Campbellsville University took the
first two Friday night.
The wins give CU a 34-17 record overall with
a 19-6 first place standing in the Mid-South
Conference. The losses drop Georgetown to
23-27 overall and 18-8, for third place.
In the opener, the CU Tigers left nothing to
chance, scoring eight runs in the second
inning and knocking GC’s starting pitcher
K.C. Massie from the game after 1 2/3
innings.
Tyler Layton did damage control for
Georgetown, but in the top of the sixth gave
up another pair of runs. When GC failed to
score in the bottom, the game ended by mercy
rule 10-0.
GC battled in the second, twice coming back
to tie it up and forcing three extra
innings, but lost 5-4 after 10 in the night
cap.
CU’s Richie Rowland started the top of the
10th, reaching by an error on Tanner
Baldwin. He would later score on a line
drive to left field by Craig Edwards,
eventually ending the game.
GC’s Baldwin had a 2 RBI double that tied
the game in the bottom of the fourth, a lead
GC gave up the next inning off an error.
Georgetown tied the game again in the bottom
of the sixth off a triple by Chris Wood,
bringing in Mike Steinke.
Weather permitting the two rivals will play
another two games Saturday. First pitch is
set for noon in Georgetown.
Karlet named head coach (4/16/10)
Brian Karlet has
officially been named Georgetown College’s
baseball coach after serving as the interim
since late November when Erik Hagen
resigned. Georgetown wanted to take its time
in making a decision for the future and just
this past week lifted Karlet’s interim tag.
“Brian
has done a tremendous job in transition and
obviously the team has responded well under
his leadership,” GC Director of Athletics
Eric Ward said. “It is always a great
situation whenever we can find a Georgetown
alum to lead one of our athletic programs.
Brian has an understanding and appreciation
for the academic and athletic expectations
we place on our student-athletes.”
Karlet added, “It is definitely an honor.
From day one I approached this as if I was
already the head coach and not just for this
year, but for the future. I was passionate
about Tiger baseball when I was a player
here, and I’m still passionate about the
program now as its coach.”
And despite a rocky start to the regular
season, the Tigers have been on a tear
through the conference schedule. They swept
St. Catharine, handing the Patriots their
first Mid-South Conference losses. Just this
past weekend the Tigers split with then No.
14 Rio Grande and are 14-4 in the MSC. GC is
currently in third, a game back from Rio and
two back from league-leader No. 21
Campbellsville University.
“We’ve done a much better job of competing
inside the Mid-South Conference, but we have
to find ways to get the wins against
non-conference opponents,” Karlet said.
The Tigers have gone 15-11 since starting
conference play, with seven of those losses
to non-conference opponents. GC’s schedule
has been a daily contest against stiff
opposition such as two top 10 teams – No. 6
Lee University and No. 2 Cumberland
University. The Tigers took the Flames to
extra innings before losing 5-4, while the
Bulldogs needed a ninth-inning homerun to
take an 11-9 win.
The Tigers have also faced No. 24 Union
College and Tennessee Wesleyan, which is
receiving votes for the top 25.
But, interim tag or not, Karlet always
stayed focused on the task at hand.
“It is an honor to serve as a coach for my
alma mater,” he said. “I am thankful that
this program has been entrusted to me and
look forward to being here for as long as
the college asks me to be.”
Tigers snap Rio Grande's win streak (4/9/10)
Georgetown College's baseball team hit the road for a four-game series against Mid-South Conference leader and No. 14 Rio Grande.
In the opening doubleheader Friday, the Tigers needed extra innings to end the RedStorm's 18 game winning streak. Tyler Back's single in the top of the 13th inning scored Tyler Fisher, who led off the inning with a double, as GC claimed a 4-3 win.
The Tigers (18-21, 13-3 MSC) never trailed in the opener at Bob Evans Field. Pete Thackston's two RBI single in the top of the first put GC out in front. Mike Steinke added another run with a solo homerun in the top of the fifth. The RedStorm (35-5, 16-2) rallied back to tie it in the bottom of the sixth. Neither team scored again until Back's single.
Kevin Rueff pitched 11 innings for GC and got a no decision. Tyler Layton pitched the final two innings for the win. Rueff scattered eight hits, allowing just three runs. He walked five batters and struck out six of the 43 he faced.
Fisher led the Tigers at the plate, going 3-of-6 with two runs scored.
Rio took the second game 2-0. K.C. Massie suffered the loss, giving up two runs in the fifth inning. He struck out four and walked two, in six innings of work.
The two teams finish the series Saturday. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
GC wins four on the road (3/28/10)
Georgetown College's baseball team entered an important weekend series and came out with a sweep of St. Catharine in Mid-South Conference play.
The Tigers (14-15, 9-1) handed the Patriots their first losses inside conference play. GC is two games behind MSC newcomer Rio Grande for first place.
This week, Georgetown plays two non-conference games, Tuesday at Morehead State and then home Wednesday against Trevecca Nazarene University. University of the Cumberlands, currently last in the conference at 1-10, comes in for a weekend series.
Late homerun upends Tigers (3/24/10)
T.J. Murphy’s three-run shot in the top of the ninth inning ended the Tigers' hopes of handing preseason No. 19 Cumberland University (Tenn.) a loss.
GC’s Tyler Fisher’s solo shot in the bottom of the eighth put the Tigers (10-15, 5-1 Mid-South Conference) ahead 9-8 and things looked promising. But, with one out Murphy played spoiler to GC’s hopes, putting up the final runs in an 11-8 victory.
CU (22-5) beat the Tigers 17-7 just a week ago in Tennessee and even built a 5-0 lead through two and a half innings Wednesday in Georgetown. However, an eight-run, seven-hit bottom of the third, put GC in control 8-5.
Mike Steinke got things started with a one-out walk and a couple of singles later, Pete Thackston came to the plate with the bases loaded. The senior’s single scored two runs, starting the offensive onslaught.
Cumberland mounted a rally in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs to trim the deficit to one. And in the top of the eighth, the Bulldogs tied the game on a pass ball. Brian Karahalios started the inning with a double. He reached third on a one-out sacrifice fly to centerfield. Now with two outs, Mitchell Earles low pitch was misplayed by Michael Schornick for the equalizing score.
Fisher led GC, going 4-for-5 from the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. The Tigers return to action this weekend at MSC foe St. Catharine.
Massie earns MSC Pitcher of the Week (3-23-10)
K.C. Massie went 2-1 over the spring break, helping the Tigers to improve to 11-14 overall and 6-1 in Mid-South Conference play.
The Lexington native worked four innings of relief to pick up the win against King College, 10-4. He allowed one run and struck out six batters in Bristol. As a starter, he pitched a shutout Saturday against MSC foe Lindsey Wilson. He scattered three hits and had seven strike outs as Georgetown won 10-0.
His efforts earned him MSC Pitcher of the Week honors, the first of the season for any GC baseball player. The Tigers return to action 3:30 p.m. Wednesday against Cumberland University, Tenn.
CU beat the Tigers 17-7 this past Wednesday in Tennessee.
Tigers blast Torando (3-17-10)
Georgetown College opened a spring break road trip with a 10-4 victory over King College.
The Tornado and Tigers split a series earlier this season, but behind solid pitching from K.C. Massie, GC pulled out the easy win in Bristol, Tenn.
Massie pitched four innings, allowing five hits and only one run to pick up the win.
A three-run fifth inning gave GC breathing room and a 7-3 lead. King got one run back in the seventh, but another three-run eighth inning secured things for the Tigers.
GC stays on the road for a game today against Cumberland University (Tenn.), and will be back in action at home Friday and Saturday against Mid-South Conference foe Lindsey Wilson. GC is currently 2-0 in conference play.
Tigers finally have home opening series (3-7-10)
Georgetown College and King College battled this weekend in a three-game series in Georgetown. It was the first home games for the Tigers after several attempts were forced elsewhere because of weather.
The Torando took Saturday's game 6-1, but GC bounced back with a 4-2 win to open a doubleheader Sunday. Chad Richie was on the hill for the Tigers and pitched a complete game for the victory. The win was the fourth of the season for GC.
However, King turned around in the second game and won by the same score, 4-2, to take the series 2-1. GC is back in action Tuesday at home against University of Buffalo at 4 p.m.
Snow wipes out baseball game
Winter weather forces baseball to cancel Tuesday's game against Union College. The Tigers were looking to travel to Barbourville, but a snow storm from Knoxville pushed the competition back to a later date.
GC will hopefully get in its first home games of the season this weekend against King College. The Torando and the Tigers will play a single game 4 p.m. Saturday and a doubleheader Sunday with the first pitch set at 1 p.m.
Baseball to play pair of doubleheaders this weekend
Georgetown College's baseball team's first home games have been canceled. However, the Tigers will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. at Union. GC will be the home team for a pair of games against Ohio Dominican.
Then the team travels to play Tennessee Wesleyan at Wesleyan Sunday. The Bulldogs are coming off a 9-8 win over Lee University. The first game will be at 1 p.m.
Tigers take No. 5 Lee to extra innings (2-20-2010)
CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Preseason No. 5 Lee University swept the Tigers with a narrow 5-4 win Saturday afternoon.
Georgetown took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth before the Flames were able to tie the score and eventually force extra innings.
GC scored a run in the top of the 10th, but Lee was able to match it in the bottom to force the game to an 11th inning. The Flames pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the 11th.
Chris Wood, Tyler Fisher, Cameron Allen and Michael Schornick had two hits each for the Tigers. Chase Ballinger went seven innings with just two hits and one run to give GC the 3-1 advantage heading into the final two innings. He had three strikeouts and just two walks in 22 batters faced.
GC falls to 1-6 on the season.
Tigers drop two at Lee (2-19-2010)
CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Preseason No. 5 Lee University handed the Tigers two losses Friday in a doubleheader in Tennessee.
The Flames won the opener 11-0, but Georgetown found its offense in the night cap. Unfortunately, Lee continued to pound the ball in a 15-11 victory.
The Tigers' Chris Wood led the charge from the plate, going 3-of-4 with three RBI. Tyler Fisher, Taylor Hatfield, Matt West and Taylor Payne crossed the plate two times each for eight of GC's 11 runs.
The two teams square off noon Saturday to finish the three-game series.

Tigers Lose Heartbreaker in MSC Finals (5-3-2009)
Georgetown, KY--Down two, with two outs, two on and senior Bryan Bonner at the plate, things looked like they could go Georgetown's way, but the shortstop's shot to leftfield was just short of the wall and the Tigers lost 7-5 to Campbellsville in the Mid-South Conference Tournament final.
Campbellsville came out firing in the first inning with a homerun by Chris Curley, his first of two in the game, and a string of hits to score three in the top of the inning. Georgetown answered with a run in the first and third before Campbellsville used a four-run inning in the fourth to complete their scoring on the day.
Georgetown fought back, behind the swings of senior Jake Mahan, who was a perfect five-for-five on the day. The Tigers scored a couple of runs in the bottom of the fifth and then a single run in the sixth to make it 7-5. Defensively, Georgetown was strong in the end, including a special double play when Colin Wilkerson caught a fly ball followed by an amazing throw to catcher Jason Frilling to complete the two-fer. Ryan Archer's diving catch in leftfield came up big before Bonner's final at bat.
Campbellsville moved to 35-10 on the year and Georgetown fell to 32-22. Now the Tigers must wait for the NAIA National Tournament brackets to see if their season will continue.

April Snow Cancels Baseball (4-7-09)
Mother nature's surprise April snow has forced the decision to cancel today's Tiger Baseball game versus Asbury College at Applebee's Park in Lexington.
Georgetown will host Trevecca Nazarene on Wednesday for a single 9-inning game to begin at 5:00 p.m.
Tigers to Take on the Cats (3-5-09)
The
Georgetown College Baseball team will have a short trip to Lexington when
the Tigers take on the Wildcats of the University of Kentucky on Tuesday,
March 10 at 4:00 p.m. at Cliff Hagen Stadium.
The last meeting between the schools was a 4-2 loss in 2005, Coach Erik Hagen's first season at Georgetown. Ironically, UK's Gary Henderson is in his first season as head coach this time around.
"They are a legitimate Southeastern Conference contender and we're really excited to have the opportunity to play them. We are very thankful and just hope we can give them a good game," said Hagen.
After two wins over No. 22 Ohio Dominican on Wednesday, the Tigers are currently 6-7 headed into this weekend's conference opener at Campbellsville.
